Apparently not, or they would have shown up by now. They did a few tree lighting ceremonies that week, and that was it. The opening graphic did show Lansing, though.

By the time the Corvair came along there were speed limits, but in the 50s even seat belts and turn signals were an option. Our 41 Ford had neither. Our 51 Ford had turn signals, and we didn't have seat belts until either 55 or 57. That would have b…

I agree with Fred, and one other point in this regard: Mao's 20 million deaths occurred mainly in th3 1950s, as a result of a misguided program called the "Great Leap Forward" in which Mao did everything he could to "modernize" China as he saw it, w…

What Year Did You Graduate From Sexton?
1963
Relationship Status:
Single
About Me:
Short version:

I was in Band, Orchestra, Latin, German clubs at Sexton. Went to Michigan State, BA TV-Radio (these days they'd call it Communications). Interrupted by the US Army to visit scenic SE Asia, then returned for a 27 year career in radio before consolidation hit the industry and it became hard for 50 or 60-somethings to hold a job.

I'll flesh this out in stages, starting with a very few words about the Army. I didn't do anything exciting, mainly pounded a typewriter for three years. I spent a year in the 'Nam, but wasn't directly involved in anything of note. I filed reports, filled out paperwork, and tried to keep my feet up on the desk as much as I could. A couple of times I got into places where some kind of incident had just happened, or happened a half mile or so away, but mostly just waited for it to be over. The most exciting time was when some sappers got into a base I was on, and the last of them were chased in my direction and captured about a block away.

After the war, I got my radio career seriously underway at WITL, 1010 AM, 100.7 FM (they made up corny air names there and called me Jack Daniels). I spent the early to mid 70s there, sometimes doing overnights, but would fill in on morning drive a lot. On MSU Game Days I did traffic reports as "The Eye in the Sky". The morning guy overslept frequently, so I did half his show, anyway. I was attracted to more outdoors activity than you could get in Lansing, so I went looking for, and found a job in the Upper Peninsula, at WDBC, Escanaba.

No funny air names at WDBC. In fact, it was station policy to use real names only (although one of the announcers sort of bent the policy). I started doing the evening shift there, and did various stints in afternoons, overnight, you name it. I was Program Director for awhile, as well as scheduling commercial traffic on the FM automation. Whenever I could, I'd take off for the weekend, with the Keweenaw Peninsula a favorite destination. I shot a lot of slides (and processed them myself) during that era. I'm just beginning to start scanning them into my computer. I have thousands to go yet. Sooner or later, some will get uploaded here.

During that period, I also got hooked on computers. When the FM station went on the air in 1976, they put in an automation system that was controlled by an early microprocessor. I was impressed by the improvements having a CPU brought to the rickety old relay-driven devices that were the first radio automation systems. When the boss brought in his Model I TRS-80, he wanted me to see if I could write software for it. It used casette-based Level II BASIC (an early Microsoft product), and the computer came with a book for a more primitive version of the lanuage, Level I. I had a lot of fun figuring it out, but a year later I was doing machine language and having all sorts of geeky fun.

When I first started working there, there was only one other station in Escanaba, and it was a daytimer. The station was primarily owned by a man in Minnesota who died in a plane crash in Alaska within a year or so of my arrival, and the chain (seven whole stations were all you could have back then) broke up. The local General Manager bought the place, we put on an FM station (WFNN originally, later WYKX, 104.7) and an economic downturn hit at about the same time. We also gained some competition on FM, and suddenly a station that had been a cash cow had to work at earning a living. We had some good years, but gradually the financial situation worsened, and the staff got pared way back. Eventually, they got around to me, and I wound up down here in Marinette as a result. That's the next chapter.
What Are You Doing Now?
Recruiting for the US Census Bureau. If you're looking for work over the next 18 months or so, look up the nearest testing site! Pay is pretty good, plus you get mileage.

I'm slowly building a library of photos of the area (and other points of interest), and locating them on a map. I'll probably be putting in more links to satellite maps as well in the comments on each photo. Only a smattering of Google Street Views are available in the area so far, so I'll try to give a feel for the area.

Here's one street view that is available.
They call this weird intersection Dunlap Square, for some reason

Just went through all the comments on the marching band group. Very interesting and brought back memories. Being in band meant you were with the same people for three years (longer if you'd been together in junior high too) so you did become like family. Would having been a banner girl make me eligible to join the marching band group?

I haven't spent enough time browsing on this reunion site to know there are groups. Thanks for telling me. What is the name? Sexton Band?
I have a friend here who is working on the census and they called her back to work this week. I did check out Warren's web site. Last time I was in Petoskey I actually took a photo of the statue of Ignatius Petoskey.

Hi Dave, I haven't been on this site for a long time so thought I'd check in and see what was going on. I was interested in the comments from Warren. I remember him and am going to do as he suggests and google him. I used to spend a lot of time in Petoskey and often thought of him when there though I did not know there was an actual connection. You are probably still busy helping with the census. I keep wondering if someone will show up at my door or if I'll get something in the mail to fill out, but so far nothing. Hope all is well with you.

I have a good friend who played trombone in the Army Band during that era. I served in the Michigan National Guard for seven years and worked in the federal army depot on West Joseph Ave. in Lansing. I was going to be drafted but could not get the bank to agree to allow me to pay interest on my new car loan and because my dad signed for me it would have become his obligation and he could not afford it. I was always embarassed by serving in the guard because of the social attitude regarding "weekend warriors." I did consider regular army taking the test for officer candidate school. My uncle and cousin whose first combat tour was in Korea in 1950 and their last combat tour was in Vietnam wrote me and told me not to do it, so I didn't. Because of my test score I was asked to consider warrant school to fly helicopters. Of course I knew what the life expectancy of the helicopter pilot was in Vietnam. My cousin and uncle were on their last three year tour before their retirement and I decided that the army sent them to Vietnam, one as a door gunner on a helicopter and the other on a recon team, to get them killed. I became quite disenchanted with the U.S. role in Vietnam and later it would prove out.

If you type my name into your computer search engine you can get an idea of what I have been doing the past ten years. In Michigan because of the City of Petoskey and how the city got its name kind of makes me a bit of a historical figure. I just finished an autobiography and my second music CD which contains songs I have written. I have several friends who help me with the recordings. One song on the first CD was considered for a Native American Music Award. I play the Native flute, guitar and do most of the vocals while my friends do the percussion, keyboard, and Melissa adds her voice in the background. I was asked by several who attended my presentations for a CD after I had played the guitar and sang. I had never thought about doing that, but a man overheard a similar conversation and offered his studio and pay as you go.

It has been about a year since we were through Marinette. I come down to Escanaba and Gladstone to get craft supplies from Noc Bay Trading Post. I also have relatives in Wisconsin that we have visited.

Well I have to get going. Take care, Dave. warren

I remember you, Dave. I know we didn't have a lot of contact in school, but it sure is good to hear from you. I have been known to chase vets down who drive by until they stop so that I can shake their hand, thank them and welcome them home. "Welcome home, Vet!" I pray this finds you and yours well. You aren't that far away from where we are. Take care. warren

I played snare drum in 60 and 61 band. Dropped out of band in 62 to concentrate on girls. If you look at 61 one band picture, I am next to John Simpson ( no relation ).I remember Corbet very well. I liked him and what he did to get us to be as good as we were. I will post a picture of Corbet, myself and bruce miller when I get the time.I went on the lions International parade to atlantic city. And two of the Detroit Thanksgiving Day parades. I speak to Bill Mcullum once in awhile. He got tossed from band and school for that matter, He does know the location and info on a lot of people since he never left Lansing and still lives in the same house. I will write more later, got to run.

This is my Senior Portrait, which I just found looking in a box of stuff my mother had. It's the same as my 63 Oracle photo, of course, but the quality is better.

From my WITL days, back in the early 70s (yes, that was my air name)

Click on this link to see the house I grew up in (which is actually at 707 N. Walnut St). It's the yellow one to the left of the driveway. It was brown when I went to Sexton.

My unit's patch from the 'Nam: The 11th Armored Cavaly Regiment, a.k.a. The Blackhorse Regiment.

Is Good Morning America coming to Lansing?

I haven't seen particulars, but they started a series this morning on great holiday displays, beginning with San Antonio. The open shows a montage of thumbnails of scenes. One of them is clearly the Capitol building, with fireworks. I took a quick look around the LSJ and didn't see any stories on their imminent arrival, but maybe one is coming.

If it was the Today show, they might show up in Madison, WI, judging by past events.
